Prudential Lighting's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Industry Topics | October 03, 2024 | The Lighting Exchange

Amid the global climate crisis, sustainability has become a central theme in business conversations. As a manufacturer, we understand our responsibility to both our clients and the planet to actively reduce our carbon footprint. At Prudential Lighting, we’ve made significant strides toward more sustainable operations and remain steadfast in our commitment to this mission.

In this article we will discuss our 2030 sustainability goals, recycling, locally sourced materials, being Declare labeled as Red List Approved, VOC-free, ROHS, and earning WELL and LEED points to provide insight on how lighting projects can be more sustainable.

2030 Goals:

Prudential Lighting is committed to four key sustainability goals by 2030:

Recycling
Recycling is a powerful strategy for reducing waste and optimizing resource use. At our LA-based plant, we’ve implemented comprehensive recycling initiatives, including:
 Complete Recycling: We recycle 100% of our aluminum, steel, plastics, wiring, and cardboard.
 Closed-Loop Water Filtration: Our powder coating process features a closed-loop system that recycles all the water used.
 Organic Waste Diversion: Organic waste is diverted to our composter, enriching our community garden.

Locally Sourced Materials
Sourcing materials locally is beneficial for the reduction of transportation emissions. The components we utilize such as aluminum extrusions, sheet steel, plastic, cardboard, and more are all sourced within 50 miles of our plants, the vast majority of the time.

RoHS
RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances and is primarily for electronic components within lighting fixtures (i.e. LEDs and drivers), not entire fixtures. Our LED arrays and standard drivers are RoHS compliant.

WELL Points
The WELL Building Standard (WELL) points are guidelines for lighting that aim to minimize disruptions to the body’s circadian rhythm, improve productivity, promote good sleep quality, and ensure appropriate visual acuity. Many of our products qualify for WELL points, including our luminaries for LO3 Tunable White, LO4 Glare Control, LO7 Visual Balance, and LO8 Electric Light Quality.

LEED Points
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, otherwise known as LEED, is the most widely used green building rating system. We help our customers earn points toward being LEED certified by meeting strict criteria in key categories of sustainable building projects through:
1. Recycled content varies and is on our SmartSpecs.
2. Daylighting features (integrated controls, available on most fixtures).
3. Lighting performance (power densities in line with ASHRAE 90.1-2016).

Control Technologies
On top of our sustainable manufacturing practices within our company, we also want to ensure that our clients are sustainable. That is why we’ve partnered with multiple controls manufacturers to provide our customers with a wide range of sustainability options, including simple sensor integration, PoE wireless, VLC and other next-generation platforms.
